Ruth Ojiambo-Ochieng is a peace activist, certified mediator and defender of women’s rights. Ruth is an Eminent Woman of the Uganda Women’s Situation Room 2020/2021, an African women’s mechanism that oversees peace before, during and after elections. She is also a co-founder of a Women Regional Network for Peace Builders in East Africa. Ruth has served on several national, regional and international boards. UNWOMEN, New York, appointed her to a 17-member team of the High-Level Advisory Board for the Global Study to Review the implementation of the UNSCR1325.
As the former Executive Director of Isis Women’s International Cross-Cultural Exchange (Isis-WICCE), renamed the Women International Peace Centre, Ruth dedicated her career to supporting women affected by violent conflicts. She led efforts to document cases of violence, including sexual violence, and implemented holistic treatment programs to provide survivors with medical, psychological, and social support. Ruth’s work empowered women to become community leaders in their communities, driving positive change and building a movement of women peacebuilders. She continues to advocate for women’s rights and promotes holistic healing as essential for building peaceful societies. She is a recipient of awards for advancing women’s rights, promoting peace and security, and building vibrant support networks of women peacebuilders. She has received recognition from the Government of Uganda, Women Have Wings, Colorado, The Ford Foundation (East Africa), Global 7nowledge Partnership, Geneva and the Gender is My Agenda Campaign of the African Union, among others.
